Sunday, November 10th, 2013

Lonely Planet, which is a very popular website among the travelers and considered the largest and most authentic travel guide on the internet, has ranked Kerala among top 10 destinations of the world to go with your family. This place of pride was accorded to God’s own country at the recently concluded World Travel Mart held in London. This major travel event was attended by representatives from around the world who chose the world’s top 10 places for a family vacation in the year 2014.

Interestingly, Kerala has been chosen as a family friendly vacation spot alongside other major destinations of the world such as Denmark, Hawaii, Italy, Denmark, Prague, and New York City. India has traditionally been considered as too intense to be taking your family to. But Kerala has emerged a friendly place for the families as it is slow paced and laid back and much greener than other places in India. Kerala also has scores of National Parks that provide chances to spot elephants. The backwaters of this green coastal state of India allow for boat rides in crystal clear waters in addition to lots of sun and sand along the beaches fringed with palm trees.

The award from the Lonely Planet was received by S. Harikishore who is a director at Kerala Tourism. The pavilion that was designed by the authorities to showcase Kerala at the travel mart labeled Kerala as the Home of Ayurveda. Thousands visited this pavilion and SA cricketer Jonty Rhodes was one of the prominent personalities thronging the pavilion. He retired from international cricket 10 years ago and is currently the tourism ambassador of South Africa.

Mr. Harikishore found the atmosphere at the event very upbeat, attributing it to brisk pace of growth in the British economy in the last quarter. British tourists comprise a sizeable chunk of visitors received by Kerala every year. Last year, Kerala received more than 1.5lakh visitors. A high percentage of all these tourists happened to be British nationals. Harikishore added that this travel mart helped the authorities to target more tourists in the coming year. The travel mart was a 4day event that started on 4 November and concluded on 7 November 2013.

The delegation from Kerala included 12 companies involved with tourism and hospitability in this Indian state. These were KTDC Hotels & Resorts, Spiceland Holidays, Vythiri Resort, Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel & Spa, Kumarakom Lake Resort, Joy’s Resorts & Hotels, Jayshree Travels and Tours, Intersight Tours & Travels, Carnoustie Beach Resort and Ayurveda Spa, Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala, and Abad Hotels & Resorts.

With Kerala being included in the top 10 family destinations of the world by Lonely Planet, tourism in this coastal state of India is sure to get a big boost in the near future. Families around the world looking for cool and relaxed vacations in the lap of nature now have a new destination in the form of Kerala.
