Punnathur Kotta

Punnathur Kotta (Anakkotta) is located at Kottapadi, around 4km away from Guruvayoor temple in Thrissur district of Kerala. This was a palace of a local ruler and now place is famous for the elephant pound where the elephants belonging to the Guruvayoor temple are kept. Punnathur Kotta elephant sanctuary is offering refuge to more than 60 elephants and regarded as one of world’s largest elephant parks.

An interesting feature of this park is that all the elephants have been denoted by the pious devotees of Lord Guruvayoorappan and are consecrated to the same. Popularly recognized as a sacrosanct sanctum for elephants, the sanctuary is teeming with elephants of all ages. Punnathur Kotta is sprawling over 10 acres of area, the place attracts hundreds of enthusiasts every day who come here to see the unique spectacle of tuskers in various modes of daily activities everywhere- some being bathed, some being fed and still others displaying playful antics. One may also watch the traditional medical treatments provided to the sick elephants.

The elephants of all ages are housed here which are trained for temple festivals by the temple management that includes the popular ‘Elephants Race’ that takes place within the confines of the temple.
