Jewish Synagogue Mattancherry

Jewish synagogue built in 1568 located at Fort Kochi, about 10 km from Ernakulam in Kerala. Jewish Synagogue of Mattancherry is the oldest synagogue in India. The synagogue was partially destroyed in a shelling during the Portuguese raid but was rebuilt two years later by the Dutch. This place of worship attracts numerous visitors every year because of its impressive furnishings. There are splendid Chinese tiles that have been used to decorate throughout the entire synagogue. There are also impressive Belgian chandeliers that have been used to decorate the building. On top of the exquisite decorations in the synagogue, giant scrolls of the Old Testament can be found here. The Jewish Synagogue in Kochi stands out as a testimony for the communal harmony in the state for centuries.
